Juan Sáiz hails from Cantabria and his first steps as a musician date back to when he began his musical studies at the Jesús de Monasterio Conservatory in Santander, where he studied classical flute with Jaime Salas and composition with Emilio Otero. He then went on to study jazz and modern music at the ESMUC in Barcelona and at the Koninklijk Conservatorium (KASK) in Ghent, Belgium.

Terell Stafford, Ron Blake, Jorge Pardo, David Liebman, Agustí Fernández, Pat Metheny and Carl Allen are some of the musicians who illustrated his apprenticeship, until Juan Sáiz found his own wings, exchanging professional experiences with Iva Bittova, Terry Day and Baldo Martínez, with whom he played at JAZZMADRID in 2020, presenting the album Fragile Giant in a trio that included Lucía Martínez.

Today, Sáiz’s professional career is enjoying a moment of artistic plenitude, thanks to the release of his album Pindio II, a highly acclaimed recording on the British label Leo Records. Leo made a firm commitment to Sáiz in 2016 when they released the first instalment of this album, especially considering that it was the first time they had released an album recorded in Spain.

As we’ve just mentioned, six years later they’ve released the second part of this project, which is now being presented at JAZZMADRID, thanks to the support of the AIE and its programme AIE En Ruta Jazz. Multicoloured and unpredictable jazz, with an undeniable contemporary fluidity. Free improvisation and avant-garde jazz as a superb example of expressive individuality that can only be reproduced through collective improvisation. Music from tomorrow that, just like everything Sáiz does, both individually and with his quartet, is still playing today.
