Two significant anniversaries related to the history of the avant-garde will be celebrated during the course of 2022. On the one hand, on a global scale, we will be celebrating the 70th anniversary of John Cage’s composition 4’33”, the work with which he revolutionised our previous awareness of silence; on the other hand, on a national scale, it will be 50 years since the Pamplona Meetings took place, the presentation in Spanish society of the new avant-garde codes developed in the second half of the century.

Attending both anniversaries in this fifth season of the VANG series should allow us to evaluate and reflect on what the avantgarde means today, and to also ask ourselves whether we can in fact speak of avant-garde music or whether what we have today are just new readings of old concepts such as listening, or the paradox of the avant-garde tradition. Some of the names that will allow us to confront this debate are the Schallfeld Ensemble, Die Ordnung der Dinge, Hara Alonso+Alba G. Corral, Carlota Cáceres, Beñat Achiary and Sleepwalk Collective, among others.
